Anchored by two of their most popular recordings, "You Keep Me Hanging On," and "Love Is Here and Now You're Gone," this LP features Holland, Dozier & Holland (HDH) compositions and productions, and it ranks among their best. The Supremes' renditions of songs popularized by label mates illustrate the interchangeability of HDH's songs. Ross's soprano may not have the bite of Ron Isley's tenor, but she still does a better than average job on "I Guess I Always Love." Two Four Tops' remakes, 'I'll Turn to Stone," and "The Same Old Song," are just as groovy as the originals. An update of Martha & Vandellas' "Love Is Like a Heat Wave" fails to live up to the dynamics of the original. The Vandellas' version was special, while this one comes off like another song for the session. "Mother You, Smother You" is too formulaic, but the singing and lyrics places it well above what other girl groups were releasing at the time. Ditto for "Going Down for the Third Time." A Supremes' album track would be an A-side for most artists. The prolific writers did an excellent job on their namesake LP, which turned out to be the last of the great Supremes albums.

A TRIVIA QUIZ: WHAT WAS THE ONLY AMERICAN BAND THAT COULD SUCCESSFULLY COMPETE WITH THE BEATLES AT THE PEAK OF BRITISH INVASION?...The band that had an unbroken string of # 1 hits at a time when climbing up to # 50 on US charts was a metaphysical concept for most American groups? If you answered Beach Boys...BEEP!!! You were wrong (how silly of you - why would I ask trivia question on Beach Boys in a Supremes auction?). The answer is: Supremes, of course.This ORIGINAL Motown LP is one of their strongest albums and includes gorgeous "You keep me hangin' on" Once you hear "You keep me hangin' on" exploding from the speakers, you will know what Holland-Dozier-Holland REALLY had in mind here. Girl Group sound was never again - or before - so masculine and punchy. And, of course, the list of people who have covered these songs reads like who's who of Rock and Soul.Track listing: You keep me hangin' on - You are gone - Love is here and now you're gone - Mother you, smother you - I guess I'll always love you - I'll turn to stone - It's the same old song - Going down for the third time - Love is in our hearts - Remove the doubt - There's no stopping us now - Love is like a heatwave. (b)          The record is STILL in its original inner, perforated plastic baggy (sealed).

(c)           The record is pressed on a beautiful, thick, inflexible vinyl, which was usually used for the first or very early pressings. Usually, the sound on such thick vinyl pressings is full-bodied, vivid, and even dramatic. Do not expect to obtain such a majestic analog sound from a digital recording!

(d)          Of course, this is a full-bodied ANALOG recording, and not an inferior, digital recording!!!
