Swamp Rats: “Louie Louie/Hey Joe!” on St. Clair MF-69
No introduction necessary I presume, for Pittsburgh’s favorite sons; the irreparable Swamp Rats. This was their first 45, released on the amazing St. Clair-label in ’66. The Sonics must’ve been huge with these Rats, ‘cause their version of “Louie Louie” is unmistakably ripped almost straight from the world’s loudest; while their second 45 was an utterly insane version of “Psycho”, which almost threatened to beat Tacoma’s sneer-gods at their own game. This 45 has some odd film or haze on the labels and on parts of both sides of the vinyl, which makes the labels appear greenish in color where it usually should be yellow. It may hail from some kind of faulty chemical reaction at the pressing-plant, as some of the original yellow color seeps through here and there on both sides (see scans) but I’m not sure.
There’s a long scratch around half-way in on the “Hey Joe”-side, which surprisingly only causes two slight pops at the beginning ; and there’s a pressing-bubble at the end which causes some minor “thumps” on the outro. There’s also a bubble (on the exact opposite spot as the other side of the vinyl) near the end of “Louie Louie”, which DNAP. Some noise at the very end of this side too. Aside from the aforementioned hazing, scratch and some very slight wear and miniscule scuffing, this one doesn’t look too bad at all, and both sides play a loud and great VG. Instead of taking my word for it, have a listen for yourself underneath! BBMF!!!
