Description
WILBUR SWEATMAN (1882 - 1961) was the pioneer "hot" clarinet player who brought the "Gaspipe" style to the public. He also is the FIRST hot clarinet player of any sort to make records ("Maple Leaf Rag" in 1903), the author of the first hot tune, "Down Home Rag," recorded by Jim Europe's band in 1913; the first to record jazz (also "Down Home Rag" for Emerson, Dec. 1916).
On this record, made in March, 1929, Sweatman lays down "Sweat Blues" (also issued as "Lead Pipe Blues") in his by then patented manner. He's assisted by GEORGE RICKSON (piano) and JOHN REEVES (trombone).
ON the flip side, an anonymous, though peppy, dance orchestra gives us "WEARY RIVER," from the Richard Barthelmess movie of the same name.
This original 1929 Grey Gull 1706 is in nice E- condition. Plays very well.
