SXL 2298 ROSTROPOVITCH/BRITTEN Decca 1st Label ED1 WBg
This is a rare early Decca first pressing (or ED1) of this recording featuring Mstislav Rostropovich (cello) and Benjamin Britten (piano). The label on the disc has a wide silver band just above the centre and a circular groove in the vinyl approx 1cm in from the edge (Wide Band with groove: WBg). On the rim of the label at 10 o’clock are printed the words “ORIGINAL RECORDING BY”. The matrix numbers engraved on the run-out are: ZAL-5296-3W and ZAL-5297-3W. The label includes the text: “RECORDING FIRST PUBLISHED 1962”. The outer sleeve is the original: lightweight cardboard, laminated on the front, printed by Robert Stace. There is no blue/black border on the back. Disc and outer sleeve were both made in England. The inner sleeve is period Decca ffss printed paper with polythene liner.

Condition of Disc
The disc is flat and the playing surfaces are glossy and clean and generally show only faint signs of having been played. Centre labels are free of writing, sticky labels or stains. There are no noticeable ‘squirreling’ marks around the centre hole. Generally, the disc plays beautifully with negligible surface noise or loss of high-end frequency. On Side 1 in the 1st movement of the Schumann, there are very faint surface marks at 11 o’clock and 7 o’clock. These marks produce some low-level crackle. Overall, I have graded the disc conservatively as ‘VG’ (Record Collector).
Condition of Sleeve
The sleeve shows some shelf/handling wear and the unlaminated back shows very faint signs of foxing. On the back, bottom right there is a single line drawn in blue ball-pen approximately 5cm long. Text on the spine and on the sleeve-notes (by Britten) are both clearly readable.
