UK ABSOLUTE FIRST PRESSING, FIRST MATRIX, FIRST MOTHERS AND FIRST STAMPERS (MAKING IT ONE OF APPROXIMATELY THE FIRST 300 COPIES EVER PRESSED) VINYL LP IN FRONT-LAMINATED GATEFOLD SLEEVE WITH ORIGINAL WHITE INNER SLEEVE.

Specific to this release and not found on subsequent releases are:
Released in a front laminated gatefold sleeve with the disc housed in the rear opening and the front opening is glued shut with no inner flap.
The backcover states printing date 6911 (November 1969). This was clearly in advance of the 1970 release date.
White straight corner cut inner sleeve with 'PATENT APPLIED FOR' and 'MADE IN ENGLAND'.

Only first pressing labels have all of the following:
1. Green/yellow Harvest Label with no 'EMI' Logo and 'The Gramophone Co. Ltd.' at 11 o'clock on the outer rim.
2. 'SYD BARRETT' appears just above the 'HARVEST' logo at 9 o'clock. Later pressings move this higher up the label.
3. Side 2 label has credits 'Barrett except + Joyce'. Later pressings have 'Barrett + Joyce'.
4. On each label side there is no gap between 'Lupus Music Ltd' and 'Produced by...' Later labels have a gap.
On the sleeve tracks B4 to B6 have a combined running time of 7:59.

THIS PARTICULAR COPY HAS AN AUTHENTIC EMI RED ON WHITE 'FACTORY SAMPLE' STICKER ON SIDE 2. This specific design, with arrow cut ends, was discontinued by EMI sometime around late 1969, early 1970, for straight edged ones. This album was probably one of the last to receive the older style sticker as stocks ran out. This specific copy was given to the seller as a favour by an EMI sales rep in the UK many, many years ago from his own 'stash' (I suspect most Factory Samples ended up in reps and reps' friends collections judging from experience over the years!). The first actual copies that made it for sale in stores were probably mostly 1/R or 1/A mother/stampers. 1/G's rarely ever turn up these days, let alone in this condition, so this will be quite a future investment for any serious collector.

SLEEVE: AN HONEST VERY GOOD++ THAT MOST OTHER SELLERS WOULD CALL EXCELLENT MINUS. JUST THE LIGHTEST OF SHELF, CORNER, RING AND EDGE WEAR. NO LAMINATE DAMAGE, SPINE GOOD AND READABLE JUST A LITTLE WEAR. INNER SLEEVE IS VERY GOOD+ WITH A COUPLE OF CREASES.

DISC: EXCELLENT MINUS. NO SCRATCHES AND ONLY ONE SPINDLE MARK ON SIDE ONE.
THIS DISC HAS CLEARLY ONLY EVER BEEN PLAYED ONCE OR TWICE AT MOST AND HAS BEAUTIFUL, THICK QUALITY, SHINY EMI VINYL WITH JUST A FEW BARELY NOTICEABLE HAIRLINES IF YOU SPEND ENOUGH TIME LOOKING FOR THEM. WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A GENUINE UNPLAYED MINT COPY (AND WHERE WILL YOU FIND ONE OF THOSE) WE FIRMLY BELIEVE THIS IS IN THE BEST CONDITION YOU ARE LIKELY TO FIND THESE DAYS - ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING IT IS A 1ST MOTHER/STAMPER.

NORMALLY, THESE DAYS, WE WOULD BE WARY OF ALL THE RARE RECORDS SUDDENLY TURNING UP WITH (OFTEN THE WRONG ERA, EVEN THE WRONG RECORD LABEL STICKER SOMETIMES, 'FACTORY SAMPLE' STICKERS FLOODING EBAY. BUT AS WE KNOW THE HISTORY OF THIS PARTICULAR DISC, AND AS THIS SPECIFIC 'FACTORY SAMPLE' LABEL WAS APPLIED TO AN A-2 MATRIX, 1/G COPY (PRIOR, PROBABLY, TO THE RELEASE EVEN HITTING THE STORES), AND THEREFORE HAS THE CORRECT (ABOUT TO BE DISCONTINUED) STYLE OF STICKER FOR THE AGE OF THE DISC, AND FURTHER WAS IN THE HANDS A REPUTABLE EMI EMPLOYEE FOR MANY YEARS, WE HAVE EVERY REASON TO BELIEVE THIS IS THE GENUINE ARTICLE - BESIDES, IRRESPECTIVE OF THE 'FACTORY SAMPLE' STICKER, THIS IS A BONIFIDE FIRST MATRIX/FIRST MOTHER/FIRST STAMPER ALBUM BY ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY REGARDED (AND TRAGIC LOSSES TO) PSYCHEDELIC AND PROGRESSIVE MUSIC ARTISTS THAT EVER SPENT TIME HERE ON EARTH.
