This truly beautiful and quite rare 2 10" LP box set [ED1] from Cetra (1001, Italian pressing, green/silver label, mono, booklet included, heavy cloth box) features conductor Victor de Sabata's famous wartime presentation of Mozart's Requiem K. 626, recorded at the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli alle Terme in Rome on 5 December 1941 with an orchestra of 160 musicians and 300 choristers, as well as a distinguished line-up of soloists.

Joining the Orchestre e Cori della Radiotelevisione Italiana, under the baton of Maestro Sabata, were the following soloists:

Pia Tassinari, soprano

Ebe Stignani, mezzo-soprano

Ferruccio Tagliavini, tenor

Italo Tajo, bass

The chorus masters were Costantino Costantini and Bruno Erminero.

Re-released for the 1956 Mozart Bicentenary, Cetra pulled out all the stops, re-issuing the recording with the highest production values – a lovely, and very sturdy, cloth box with 2 inlaid sleeves attached to a dowel, and Mozart's portrait in embossed silver coloring.

Included is a superb 8-page booklet printed on heavy art paper. In addition to an appreciation of Sabata's artistry, there are extensive notes on the music by Attilio Cimbro – all texts in Italian only.

PLEASE NOTE:

One of the 2 LPs is still-sealed in its original plastic bag. The other is not, but appears to have been well cared for.

This set was similarly issued in the USA in a nice box, also with 2 10" LPs inside, and a red coloring to the design. That more familiar edition is the first USA pressing. This is the true first issue, pressed by Cetra in Italy in 1956, and considerably more rare.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the box is EXCELLENT. There is minor edgwear, but that is all. There are no corner breaks, seamsplits, bends, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains perfectly solid, bright, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.

The condition of the 8-page booklet is near-MINT – a superb collector’s copy.

The condition of the unsealed LP is EXCELLENT. There is light surface noise, but nothing overly obtrusive. These early Cetra pressings were a bit noisy. In fact, even the still-sealed LP would most likely also rate at EXCELLENT. If you are expecting, or must have, flawless or NM surfaces, then please do not buy this set – these rates as excellent collector's copies.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
