Description
Offered here is a rare and historically significant 10-inch 78rpm record featuring the legendary Salima Pasha (Salima Murad), widely considered the most famous female vocalist in Iraqi history. This double-sided recording on the German Polyphon Musik label captures a complete two-part performance, a hallmark of the early 20th-century "Oriental" recording era.
The artist is identified as Sitt Salima Al-Baghdadia (Salima Pasha) performing the title "Jawzi Ajuz Alayya" (???? ???? ???) across Parts 1 and 2. Salima Pasha was a pioneer of Iraqi Maqam, and her recordings for European labels like Polyphon are highly sought after by archivists and collectors of Middle Eastern vocal heritage. This German-pressed disc carries Catalog and Order numbers V.42254 and V.42255 on 10-inch shellac.
The labels are as shown in the photos. The disc is in "V-" condition, with loss of sheen, scuffs and scratches.
The recording was made with an Audio Technica AT-LP120 turntable, a Shure M44 cartridge with a 2.7mil stylus into a Yamaha receiver Phono section. The RIAA curve was inverted in Audacity, then a "European 78" curve was applied. No noise reduction was used.
