Description
Santana - Lotus (3LP Vinyl, 1975, Holland/Germany, Columbia CBS 66 325).
Santana's 3-album live record, recorded in Osaka, Japan in 1973. It was released in Japan in 1974, and then in Europe in 1975. This copy has "MADE IN HOLLAND" on all of the labels, and "PRINTED IN GERMANY" on the packaging. Lotus was not released in the US until 1991, which I believe was CD only, not vinyl.
Lotus is lavishly packaged. It comes in a trifold cover with custom inner sleeves (pictured). In addition there are two four-panel inserts, printed on both sides. The packaging is full of eclectic (confusing?) imagery, drawing from Christianity, India, Egypt, UFOs, and other sources.
eBay limits me to 12 images so I couldn't begin to show everything. I do have pictures of everything so if you are interested I can send them.
The jacket is in good shape, overall. There is a small rip on the bottom of the wide spine. There is some corner and spine wear, and a few defects on the front cover. All of the inside packaging is in great condition.
Musically, Lotus delivers what one would expect from Santana of this era -- complex Latin rhythms under more or less rock music, with some jazzy overtones. There are a number of Santana classics -- "Oye Como Va," "Black Magic Woman, "Samba Pa Ti" -- some new tracks, and some covers (yes, I know, "Black Magic Woman" and "Oye Como Va" are covers, but when one thinks of these songs, Santana is the artist that comes to mind). Of course there is oodles of insane guitar from Carlos Santana.
Lotus sounds great. The recording is crisp, and like every European disc I've ever listened to, the quality is excellent. There is a stray crackle and tick here and there but otherwise perfect.
A great record in a great package.
