Description
Santiago Jimenez con Flaco Jimenez y Juan Viesca, Arhoolie Records LP 3013, original 1980 pressing, recorded in San Antonio, Texas in May 1979 by legendary folk and roots music documentarian Chris Strachwitz. This copy is signed on the back cover by Santiago Jimenez Jr., son of the featured artist and a titan of traditional Tejano conjunto music in his own right — a National Heritage Fellowship recipient and 2016 National Medal of Arts honoree.
The record captures Santiago Jimenez Sr. near the end of his performing life in an intimate conjunto setting alongside his son Leonardo “Flaco” Jimenez on bajo sexto and Juan Viesca on string bass. Santiago Sr. is one of the founding architects of Musica Nortena — the sound of the Texas-Mexico borderlands — credited with being among the first accordionists to bring the tololoche into conjunto recordings and radio broadcasts in the 1930s. Flaco, of course, went on to become the most famous Tejano accordionist of his generation, recording with the Rolling Stones and Dwight Yoakam and anchoring the Grammy-winning Texas Tornados. This album, recorded just a few years before Santiago Sr.’s death in 1984, is a rare document of father and son performing together in the traditional style.
Condition of sleeve is Very Good, disc is excellent, with no surface wear.
