Description
Thelonious Monk is my favorite musician and this is my favorite album of his. He was born to play the Ellington standards, and this is his homage that older and more widely known piano jazz genius. On this album, Monk is out front with solid but lowkey backing by Kenny Clarke and Oscar Pettiford--this is his show. Playing these tunes, he shared with us the essence of Monk the person and Monk the musician: sometimes moody, sometimes exuberant, sometimes slightly dissonant, with his usual his quirky beats.
I found this LP at the Harvard Coop store around 1963 and its time for me to sell all my vinyl and pass this old favorite on to someone else.
