Scat was a fixture on the Milwaukee jazz scene in the 50s and 60s. His sons went on to be 1st call New York jazz musicians. Scat stayed in Milwaukee and was playing the gitorgan when I met him. In the early 50's, he toured with an early version of the Ink Spots, then called the Four Riff brothers.
This was an estate sale find. It seems more like styrene than shellac. It cleaned up pretty well ( was very dirty when I bought it. I ran it through my manual record cleaner, then played it, which kicked up some white powder which I removed, then ran it through the disc cleaner again, result, a pretty clean record), and plays ok with some background noise. Graded V.
It has manually applied paper labels from the studio at which it was recorded that say "The Voice of Milwaukee" "Milwaukee Sound Service" with address on N.18th Street (a Jewish neighbor hood in the 50s, now in the ghetto) and an old phone exchange.
Songs are You Call It Madness (a ballad) and Oh But I Do (a jump blues workout with call and response vocals). These are in the style of Charles Brown or Nat King Cole. Scat croons nicely in front of a jazz combo ( don't know who the local band was) and plays guitar like Tiny Grimes or Slim Gaillard. It's pretty amazing to think that this kind of music was being made in Milwaukee 60 years ago...
This does not appear to be a commercial release, but rather what might have been a demo opportunity or a chance to just be on a 78 record.
