This handsome LP from Westminster (WST 14003, US pressing, red/black “Natural Balance” label – ED1, stereo) features conductor Herman Scherchen and the Vienna State Opera Orchestra’s langorous and evocative account of Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade Op. 35, with violinist Rudolf Streng the charismatic soloist – warmly recorded in the rich acoustics of the Mozartsaal, Vienna, on 1 May 1957.

Of DG/Universal’s CD re-issue of this performance, the critic for BBC Music Magazine wrote:
“Judging by the recent crop of reissues and historic broadcast performances, there are still many recordings from the Fifties that deserve wider dissemination... A[n] unaffected approach is manifested in HERMANN SCHERCHEN’s 1957 Westminster recordings with the Vienna State Opera Orchestra of two Russian orchestral showpieces – Rimsky-Korsakov’s Sheherazade and Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture. Neither performance has that extra degree of high-voltage passion one finds in more self-consciously virtuosic or hard-driven interpretations. Some may find this a disadvantage, but Scherchen’s capacity to allow the music to speak for itself deserves admiration.”
There are authoritative liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by James Lyons, Editor of The American Record Guide. The alluring cover photo was taken by Lester Krauss.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. Really this is close to NM. There is minor wear at corners and mild shelfwear, but that is all. There are no seamsplits, bends, owners' markings or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not silent and there are some scattered tics, in general playback is quite fine. However, if you must have flawless or NM surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
