ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This outstanding 2LP box set – a beautiful collector's copy and signed by the artist – from EMI (27 0077 3, German pressing, DDD stereo, booklet included) features Heinrich Schiff's magnificent presentation of Bach's Six Suites for Solo Cello BWV 1007-1012, recorded at the Evangelische Kirche, Seon, Switzerland on 5-7 March, 21-22 May, 18-20 September, and 26-28 November 1984, perhaps the first truly great set of the digital era, and still among the finest ever to grace the record catalog, and superbly engineered.
Note: This set was signed by Heinrich Schiff himself, in bold fashion, on the box front.
It is worth re-printing conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt glowing tribute to Schiff's playing, preserved in the booklet (described below):
"Today I heard the Fourth and Fifth Bach Cello Suites played by Heinrich Schiff for the first time. It is one of the most impressive interpretations of this music that I can imagine. The Preludes almost give the impression of being improvised, and the C minor fugue is played with irresistibly sprung, yet finely nunanced rhythm. The tempo and spirit of the dance movements are superbly portrayed so that one senses the contemporary nature of the dance rhythms. Bach emerges as an 18th century Johann Strauss." – Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Vienna, 4.1.85
Wrote the esteemed critic Ivan March in the March 2001 issue of The Gramophone upon EMI's 2CD 'Double-Forte' release of this set: "Heinrich Schiff’s set of the unaccompanied Bach Cello Suites is digitally recorded with the utmost naturalness, the cello timbre warm and beautifully focused. So, too, are the performances, which are splendidly paced; Bach’s linear flow is effortlessly phrased and moves forward with fine spontaneity...Very highly recommended."
Included with this set is the handsome full-size, 8-page booklet, which contains striking photos of Schiff, an extensive discussion of the music by Georg vaon Dadelsen, and Nikolaus Harnoncourt's eloquent tribute, quoted above.
CONDITION:
The condition of the box is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the box appears virtually as new – a beautiful collector's copy.
The condition of the full-size, 8-page booklet is also near-MINT. Again, there are no flaws to speak of whatsoever, the pages remain bright and crisp, the binding perfect.
The condition of the two LPs is near-MINT throughout. There are no spindle trails or other marks and the discs play without defect of any kind – superb collector's copies.
