ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and quite rare gatefold LP from Telefunken (LE 6505, German pressing, purple/silver AH "Langspiel33Platte" label, mono) features conductor Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt and the magnificent NDR Symphony Orchestra in a resplendent account of Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor Op. 95 "From the New World", recorded in the rich acoustics of the Stadhalle, Lübeck on 19 May 1953. This is masterly conducting and playing by any measure, and is a performance that deserves to be much better known – wonderful!
Incidentally, on the left interior panel of the gatefold jacket are printed other titles from the Telefunken catalog.
CONDITION – PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the gatefold jacket is VERY GOOD. The only serious defect concerns the inner pocket of the gatefold sleeve, that holding the LP, which is torn in two places along the left edge (the jacket opens to the right). However, the LP is in no danger of falling out. There is also a 1" seamsplit to the lower edge of the rear panel, slight bumping at corners, minor edgewear, a small bit of writing to the front panel, and mild discoloration to the rear panel. However, the album remains solid and highly attractive – overall, a very good collector's copy.
The condition of the LP itself is GOOD. Though there is light surface noise throughout, as well as numerous needle-like sounds, in general the playback remains enjoyable. It is true that the sound is closer to an historical recording than a modern one, but if one takes that attitude, they will find the sound big and bold. Needless to say, those wanting a flawless or near-MINT copy are advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this rates as a good collector's copy.
