This beautiful LP – a superb collector's copy – from Columbia Masterworks (ML-4176, US pressing, gray 6eye label, mono) features a magnificent rendition of Schubert's Piano Trio No. 2 in E-flat Major D. 929 (Op. 100) performed by violinist Alexander Schneider, cellist Pablo Casals, and pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski, recorded live in the warm acoustics of the Église Saint-Pierre, Prades, France, during 1-2 July 1952.

 

A quite magical alchemy seemed to occur during the Festivals held in Prades and Perpignan, with performance after performance not merely rising above the routine, but reach heights of expression and musical depth seldom encountered on disc or in the concert hall, all the more remarkable for being recorded 'in concert'.

 

No chamber music collection could be complete without some performances from Casals' legendary festivals at Prades and Perpignan and this LP preserves exalted music making by some of the greatest musicians of the last century: truly wonderful music-making.

 

There are informative liner notes (uncredited) on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in English only. The striking cover design is similarly uncredited.

 

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

 

The condition of the jacket is near-MINT. Really, there are no flaws to speak of and the jacket appears virtually as new – overall, an outstanding collector’s copy. 

 

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though the surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT) this is a fine copy and playback is superb. If you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, this rates as a NM collector's copy.

This LP has been carefully cleaned using a VPI cleaning machine. All LPs are provided with a new Nagaoka (or Nagaoka-style) inner sleeve.
