Note: The buyer of this LP will receive free a second jacket of this same performance (same catalog number LPM 18855, German edition, etc.) – it simply has different cover art, a photo of Schneiderhan and Furtwangler. I would grade this jacket as VG (edgewear, no seamsplits) – the LP to it is lost; thus the buyer will receive 1 LP, but 2 jackets).

This handsome LP from Deutsche Grammophon (LPM 18855, German pressing, AH tulip label, mono) features Wolfgang Schneiderhan’s Olympian account of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto in D Major Op. 61, recorded “live” with conductor Wilhelm Furtwanger and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at Titania Palast, Berlin, on 18 May 1953.

There are at least 3 other extant accounts of Schneiderhan in this work, each with their own merits. His first studio recording, made only a week later with van Kempen and the BPO (at Jesus-Christus-Kirche) boasts finer sound, and the re-make with Jochum in stereo (again with the BPO, also at Jesus-Christus-Kirche) even finer still, a more spacious performance.

Nonetheless, not unexpectedly, Furtwangler’s presence on the podium brings an added frisson, the Berliners responding with steely strength and great beauty in moments of repose.

The striking cover photo of Furtwangler is credited to Kessler, Berlin. There are excellent liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Friedrich Herzfeld, printed in German, English, and French.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is VERY GOOD. There is a minor bend/crease to the lower-right corner, as well as bumping/wear at corners and some shelfwear. However, there are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the album remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a very good collector's copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although the surfaces are not absolutely silent, really this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. Those requiring a flawless or near-MINT copy are kindly advised to look elsewhere. Overall, this is an excellent collector's copy.
