ITEM DESCRIPTION:
This handsome and rare 2 LP box set – a superb collector's copy – from STIL Discotheque (0809 et 1409 S 76, German Teldec · Telefunken-Decca pressings, silver labels, stereo) features 30 Keyboard Sonatas by Domenico Scarlatti played in brilliant fashion by the great Scott Ross, recordings made in Paris in 1976 (producer: Bruno Menny / engineer: Brigitte Müller). Ross plays a 1968 replica, fashioned by Jean-Pierre Batt, of an original instrument (1759) by Antonio Baffo, held at the Musée Instrumental du Conservatoire National de Paris.
Neither the booklet nor the box provides the Longo or Kirkpatrick numbers for these Sonatas, but they are 30 on offer here, superbly recorded; performances quite unlike any other.
Included is an 8-page booklet with extensive notes on the music by Roy Howat – all texts in French only.
CONDITION:
The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.
The condition of the box is near-MINT. Aside from some very mild shelfwear, really, there are no flaws to speak of and the box appears almost as new. There are no corner breaks, bends, owners' markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, this rates as a truly fine collector's copy.
The condition of the 8-page booklet is VERY GOOD. There are some small notations and the booklet betrays a bit of handling, but that is all.
The condition of the 2 LPs is near-MINT throughout. Although surfaces are not absolutely silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), really these are very fine copies and playback is truly superb across all 4 sides. However, if you must have absolutely perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this set. Overall, these rate as truly fine collector's copies.
