This is the original 1969 UK Direction label mono issue of his first 1958 album, with the A-1 B-1 matrices and the earliest A-1/A-1 mother stampers of the first pressing copies!

The first album by Screamin Jay Hawkins was originally released in the USA & Canada on Okeh Records in 1958. The single 'I Put A Spell On You' was an instant sucess and eventually propelled him to world wide fame. He developed a persona that has been called 'a crazed version of Vincent Price', but although it brought fame, Jay Hawkins was uneasy about the image. Even with his reservations he went on to develop a whole stage act around the character, with a skull on a stick and rubber snakes. He continued to record and tour in the US & Europe throughout the 1960's and seventies, finally getting releases in the UK in 1969, although reordered from the Okeh release & with additional later tracks.

The Upton Printing Group front laminated sleeve is intact & in VG+ condition, with some corner/edge wear and some laminate rubbing on the front cover and some light storage rubbing & discolouration, with a small name in biro on the unlaminated rear cover. The spine is intact, slightly crushed and fully readable, the plain company inner is intact & in EX condition.

The record is in visually VG+ condition, with a few faint sleeve removal hairlines and a couple of light needle marks/scuffs visible on each side. The labels are in EX condition, clean & bright with a name in biro on one side and evidence of a few faint spindle markings on each side.

The sound reproduction is VG+ to EX, still clear & precise throughout with no loud pops, hiss or crackle & definately no skips, sticks or jumps, but there is some low background noise during the run in grooves and briefly in a couple of the quieter passages.
Overall, still a really good, loud & lively listen.

The matrix nos. are; 63481, A-1 stamper A-1, B-1 stamper A-1. This is one of the first few hundred copies of the first pressing of the original UK mono issue of this 1969 album!
