• Barry Goldberg's discography of rock jamming, recorded back when Phish and other participants in the jam band scene weren't even twinkles in anyone's eye, is an incoherent jumble of repackagings, reissues, and albums with similar titles. There may not be a single one of these albums that actually has correct credits for the instrumentalists involved; Mike Bloomfield, for example, often hides behind a pseudonym because of this or that piece of paper he signed. A simple rule may help in the location of the best of this material. If there are not that many songs, and the individual tracks are quite long, that's a good sign. If there are lots of titles, and lots of blues titles, then don't bother with it. Which brings us to this album, which from the look of its original cover was simply dumped on the market without much care or consideration. A contest between two album cover designers over who can finish an entire layout, including credits, before the coffee gets cold may have been behind the cover. The name of the bassist is left out in the process. Or is Bloomfield playing bass while Harvey Mandel is soloing, and the other way around? There are five songs in the program, two of them not much over four minutes and the rest at some kind of jam length, especially the 12-and-a-half-minute "I Got to Love My Woman." The shorties are straight blues, and are the low points of the set. The beat is not happening on the opening "Sweet Home Chicago"; it might be worth suggesting that the organist check out some records of Chicago blues to see how it should sound, but such a comment would be totally obnoxious. Surely Goldberg has listened to more records of that type of music than any music critic.
• The jamming is where things really take off. Goldberg has a sound of his own on the organ and is always going somewhere interesting in his solos, provided he can keep the eager guitarists out of his way. As in his work with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Bloomfield uses the jams as a chance to stretch away from his B.B. King style, which is also on display, complete with bent-string elaborations that are practically byzantine. Mandel has much more personality in his playing, and is something of a master in terms of unusual tone colorings. Nonetheless, drummer "Fast" Eddie Hoh completely steals the long jam with a solo that hints at the mystery of why there are so many people in the music business with the nickname of "Fast Eddie," sounding like at least three of them are on-stage playing the drums. "Mess 'a da' Blues" is another long jam, a stock slow blues feature in which the guitarists get to chop at each other. Tracks such as this do have an appeal, but it is blues in name only; the track has no real emotional content the way an actual blues song would, and because of the athletic guitar calisthenics becomes not much more than a display of technique. The original release had no songwriting credits for any of the material.

• Barry Goldberg was a regular fixture in the white blues firmament of the mid-'60s that seemed to stretch from Chicago to New York. A keyboardist (organ seemed to be his specialty), Barry was an in-demand session man -- he appears with Michael Bloomfield on a Mitch Ryder album, for instance -- along with Al Kooper and his blues-playing contemporary from the original Butterfield band, Mark Naftalin. Goldberg was a member of Charlie Musselwhite's first band, contributing great piano and organ lines to the Stand Back! album (his work on "Cristo Redentor" is moody and introspective, with a strong jazz-inflected feel, while still retaining strong blues roots) and a handful of others throughout the decade.

• This Sealed LP came from a record store called "Phantasmagoria" which was located in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Phantasmagoria went out of business in 1978. I purchased most of their unsold inventory some years later when I owned "Music Madness" - a new & used record store in Catasauqua, Pennsylvania.
• Phantasmagoria used round colored stickers to indicate the price of the albums. They had a chart on the wall with the color sticker combinations for the customers to use so they knew the price of the albums. Most of the albums still have these stickers on them, and in some rare cases, the stickers are written on. Some of the records have prices on them. This is the price you would have paid for the record in 1978 if you would have bought it at Phantasmagoria. Please don't confuse these prices with their current value.
• All Sealed LP(s) are being sold as collector's items and cannot be returned due to manufacturer's defects. It may be almost impossible to replace many of the sealed albums that I am selling.

• If I list an album as "New", but not sealed, it is because the album is probably an import or from a small USA record company. Back in the 70's, many imported albums were not sealed by the record companies, and the importers/distrubutors did not spend the time or money to seal them before being sent to the stores. I will not knowingly misrepresent an album as new if I have any doubts.

Your Sealed LP(s) will be shipped within 2 business days after I receive your cleared payment. When possible, if payments are made by 2 PM Eastern time, I will try to send your package the same day if my local Post Office is open.

I photograph all packages before taking them to the Post Office to confirm their condition prior to being handed over to the Post Office. Damage to your package after being handed over to the postal system will not be my responsibility. If you are concerned about damage during shipping, consider upgrading to Priority Mail. It includes free insurance.

If you have ANY special shipping requirements (extra padding, oversized boxes, etc., you must let me know BEFORE making your payment. The pre-calculated cost of your shipping is based my standard packaging (new boxes, padded envelopes, etc.).

WITHIN U.S.A.

• The default shipping is Media Mail. You can opt to pay extra for for Priority Mail if you choose.
• Priority Mail  is faster and includes free insurance.
• Pick-up is fine with me, but be prepared to pay by cash. E-mail me to setup a time and place that is convenient for the both of us.

OUTSIDE U.S.A.

• International Shipping is calculated by the weight of your package.
• If you purchase multiple items, please wait until after all the auctions end for eBay to send an invoice.
• I cannot ship by International First Class if it is not available to your country. The USPS discontinued this service to several countries. If it is not an available option, I will send a revised invoice with the least expensive option available to your country. This is non-negotiable because I have no control over the shipping options and rates to your country.
• The buyer is responsible for all customs regulations and fees in their own country. I will declare the value of all items at $10 each on the Customs Form.
