There are some surprises in store for the listener who, like me, lost sight of Mr. Simon after he faded from sight on the pop charts a few years before this 1981 release. The first surprise is the producer's name: PORTER WAGONER. Now, there was no secret ever made about the Nashville connection for Joe Simon; he carved out a niche for solid R&B with a slight hint of country that retrospectively brings to mind a slightly grittier and less overtly commercial Lionel Richie, blessedly without Richie's massive overexposure. But the stretch for Wagoner is a bit of a shock. Fortunately, it works quite well most of the way through this fairly solid outing. Wagoner's extensive experience in the studio is evident, as he deftly takes some of the arrangements and wisely uses the available horns, guitar, strings, and backing vocals as punctuation more than layering them into an overproduced mess, especially on Mickey Newberry's "Love Look at Us Now" and one of the 3 tunes co-written by Simon, "We're Together." Both of these tracks tiptoe up to the disco genre but avoid the excesses that ultimately made that sound so toxic; however, there must have been chuckles in the studio when Wagoner's tune "All Over Me" is blasted straight into disco city. The other surprise here, for me, is the extensive use of Simon's fine falsetto. While his distinctive husky baritone was always one of the calling cards that made him stand out from the pack, most of the tracks here focus instead on his gentler side vocally, even on the uptempo numbers. Not a bad choice, but too much for my taste; it's a relief when he belts it out in the range we're more familiar with. Unsure if there was some health issue involved, so it's little more than a nitpick.
