Edith Hill & Selah, Symposium: The Children, The Peppered Snowfall Records PS1, 1972, Los Angeles, CA. Rare private issue from singer Hill and the band Selah, accompanied on several tracks by a childrens chorus. The sound and concept here resembles the best elements from Black Jazz, Strata East, Tribe labels: biting satirical lyrics; deep political and social conscience; tracks of soulful electric piano-based jazz grooves with flute, sax, bass, drums -typically dark in character, or groove organ--again dark--or psychedellic studio effects alternating with reworkings of traditional tunes like "America the Beautiful" and "Dixie" rewritten with deep satirical lyrics sung by the children's chorus and Hill. Very, very effective and well-thought through and executed. How many of these were pressed? Begging for a re-issue and sampling!
