Billy Bragg's 'Difficult Third Album' released in September 1986, is widely regarded as a musical turning point for the Bard of Barking. The record blends his signature bare-bones folk-punk style with richer, more varied instrumentation, broadening its appeal to a wider audience.

 

Titled "Talking With the Taxman About Poetry", it was named after the 1926 poem by Soviet poet Vladimir Mayakovsky. The album contains 12 songs written during the aftermath of the U.K nationwide miners' strike, and serves as a defiant protest against the harsh realities of a Thatcher-led Britain. 

 

Praised by both fans and critics, the album sold well and managed to peak at number 8 in the U.K charts.

Smiths fans will be interested to know, that the album was produced by John Porter and Kenny Jones, and features the familiar intricate arpeggio picking of legendary guitarist Johnny Marr accompanied by the backing vocals of Kirsty MacColl on two standout tracks.
