Description

Up for your consideration is one set of five (5) Seeburg Background Music Library records which were used in the Seeburg Background Music System from approximately 1959 through the early 1980's.

These records are a mixed bag and do not contain the original box.


Four records are before 1960-61. The last one has a “place in use date of 7-1-61 on it. The included box has a place in use date of April 1, 1965. A piece of cardboard was inserted by a previous owner to keep records still (not original cardboard). Back of the box has a label, “Music Vend Distributing Co., Seattle, Washington.”

The box for this collection contains 5 Basic format records.

Records 4 and 9 have just one number on the label and I believe these would have been the first Seeburg records released. Records 15 and 20 have a “Replace” number on the label which probably meant they would have replaced older records. Four records have “Capitol Custom” printed on them, except for the record labeled, “Place in use 7-1-61” which has “Columbia Record Productions” on the label.

All records in this listing have been played once by me on a Pioneer turntable, using a .6 or .7 mil stylus with 2.5 grams of tonearm weight and are graded below.

Condition of these records and corresponding number is listed below:

  • 4-A, good condition with some wear, a couple of scratches that did not affect play
  • 4-B, good condition with some wear, with 3 light scratches that did not affect play
  • 9A, nice and clean.
  • 9B, nice in clean with a few very tiny dots (bruise) and one bruise down the length of the record that does not affect play.
  • 15-A, Replace No. 3, good condition with some wear, no visible scratches.
  • 15-B, Replace No. 3, nice and clean with no scratches. A couple of very tiny blisters that should not affect play.
  • 18A Place in use 7-1-61, nice and clean with a few bruises that did not affect play.
  • 18B Place in use 7-1-61, nice and clean with a a tiny bruise.
  • 20A, Replace No. 3, Nice and clean with a very light bruise.
  • 20B, Replace No. 3, some wear with some marks 2 centimeters in that should not affect play.
Records are 9 inches in diameter and have a center hole of approximately 2 inches in diameter. They play at a speed of 16 2/3 rpm.

These types of records were originally played in a Seeburg BMS player which was used in Grocery Stores, Department Stores, Motels, Factories, etc., to broadcast background music over the PA system. Seeburg put out three formats, Basic, Mood and Industrial.

Replacements were issued quarterly. The subscriber of the service was to change out 5 or 7 discs, based on the number on the record label and send back the used discs that were removed from the machine. Failure to do so resulted in the subscriber being charged an additional 22 cents per month for each record not returned, according to the instructions on the box. Records, once returned, were never used again and presumably destroyed.

I will be listing numerous sets of these records over the next few weeks. Most of my collection is Seeburg but I also have a few odds and ends labeled, Rowe Customusic, a competitor of Seeburg.
