Description
This lot contains seven 10-inch single-sided 78 RPM records, all on the Oxford label. Oxford was a Sears Roebuck label in use between about 1906 and 1915, and their labeling often did not identify the artist or band, although the label's frequent use of Columbia masters sometimes allows for deductions to be made. All seven are shown in the first two pictures, front and back, and, as you can see, there are patent notices on the backs of all but one of them (I forget which one). The third picture shows a close-up example of one of the patent notices.
The remaining pictures show the individual records, in the following order:
1. Oxford # 13745 -- "Field of Roses (Waltz)", Mandolin and Guitar Trio played by Trio Arriaga.
2. Oxford # 21-- "The Arkansaw Traveler (Descriptive)", uncredited, but the number 21 is a Columbia matrix number that - according to Discogs - identifies the artist as Harry Spencer.
3. Oxford # 368-- "Charge of the Light Brigade", credited only as "Band."
4. Oxford # 3935 -- "Rainbow (Baritone and Tenor Duet)", sung by (Frank) Stanley and (Henry) Burr.
5. Oxford # 3983 -- "Orchids (Three Step)" by Thomas Mills, labeled as "Orchestra Bells" with "Orchestra Accompaniment."
6. Oxford # 325 -- "Dancing in the Dark", with the anonymous label credit "Band." In this case, however, the number 325 is a Columbia matrix number that identifies the group as a Columbia studio band labeled simply as "Columbia Band" on corresponding Columbia releases from the same master.
7. Oxford # 19745 -- "Hear the Band", labeled as "Vocal quartette, male voices", which Discogs identifies as Prince's Male Quartette.
The records are still nice and shiny, and most of them don't have a lot of visible surface wear. I've played them all on my Audio-Technica turntable, with no skips or jumps, but with varying degrees of background noise. Five of them, in my estimation, had a level of background hiss that is typical for records of this age. The two with more noticeable background noise were "Charge of the Light Brigade" (which has a passage of ticking caused by a nasty needle gouge); and "Field of Roses" (which has more needle scratches and is also warped, causing the needle to bob and swish). Some of the others are also slightly warped, but I didn't detect the same amount of swishing on my system. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment.
