Description
This lot contains eight 10-inch 78 RPM records featuring Paul Whiteman and his Orchestra. Although my item title says there are "seven" records in the lot, there is also one duplicate, as is explained below.
Only one side - "Everybody Step" - is considered "hot" enough for inclusion in Brian Rust's iconic Hot Jazz Discography, which gives it a recording date of October 21, 1921. The other Victor sides are all listed in Rust's "American Dance Band Discography", but not the Decca sides, which might have missed the book's cutoff date of 1942.
Unless noted otherwise below, the label credits are in the name of Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra, so please pay attention to the variations. All are also instrumental except where a vocalist is mentioned.
All eight records showed up for the first picture, then they are shown in pairs, both sides, in the following order:
Victor # 19211 - "Linger Awhile"; and "Hollywood", the latter by Joe Raymond and His Orchestra.
Victor # 18735 - "Bright Eyes" and "Love Bird."
Victor # 19211 (duplicate) - "Linger Awhile"; and "Hollywood", the latter by Joe Raymond and His Orchestra.
Victor # 18803 - "Sweet Lady" and "Say It with Music."
Victor # 19299 - "What'll I Do" and "Lazy."
Victor # 18826 - "Everybody Step" and "Ka-Lu-A - Blue Danube Blues."
Decca # 2268 -- "The Japanese Sandman" and "Ragging the Scale", both sides by Paul Whiteman's Swinging Strings.
Decca # 2578 -- "Moon Love" and "To You" (vocal on both sides by Joan Edwards).
The last one looks virtually unplayed, still beautifully shiny and hardly any visible surface wear. The other Decca, although equally shiny, has a couple of horrible needle digs on the "Japanese Sandman" side, causing skips and repeats in a couple of places.
"Lazy", as well as both sides of "Everybody Step" and both sides of "Sweet Lady", also look beautifully shiny and virtually unplayed, at least VG+ condition, maybe better, and they play through with no skips or jumps and just typical light background hiss. "What'll I Do", although nice and shiny, has some significant enough needle scratches to cause a downgrade to VG.
The other three records are in used and worn condition, not as shiny as they used to be, and with visible surface scuffs and scratches and dull spots. All six of the sides play through without skipping or repeating on my Audio-Technica turntable, but with varying degrees of background noise, interspersed with pops and clicks and some passages of ticking or swishing. Because of variations in tracking ability, filtering technology and needle weights, I can offer no guarantees as to how well they will play on your equipment. Please also check the pictures for any label damage or inscriptions or stickers.
Also included are the Victor and Decca sleeves shown in the pictures, which are chipped and creased and torn and add nothing to the overall value.
