Matrix numbers
Side 1: YEX689-1 9 o'clock 1 3 o'clock R (lacquer 1, Mother 1, Stamper 2)

The Matrix This can be found on the run off grooves typically at six o'clock and would have for example –1 or perhaps –2 endings an example of a matrix,Let us say for a UK Beatles mono Rubber Soul would be XEX 638-1 -1 indicates the first lacquer that was made -2 would indicate the second lacquer that was made –3 the third and so on! With looking at the matrix at six o'clock we can see a set of markings at three and nine oclock. At nine oclock these are the mother for example this could be a number #5 At three o'clock these are the stamper codes: It is important to note that EMI used a code ‘’GRAMOPHLTD’’ G=1 R=2 A=3 M=4 O=5 P=6 H=7 L=8 T=9 D=0
Condition
Record: VG+ graded conservatively its more a near EX with only a couple of non sounding scuffs and while its been played there not a huge amount of spindle marks
Sleeve: VG as slight creasing as seen but closer to VG+ and certainly very little opining wear again showing its not been played for hundreds of times and been very well cared for (for the last 15 - 20 years by me). Very small biro name on rear sleeve. Didn't even know it was there until cropping photos!
I use record collector grading but also add a + and - where necessary since their grading standard can be too simplistic.
Mint (M): The record is in brand new condition with no surface marks or deterioration in sound quality. The cover and any extra items such as the lyric sheet, booklet or poster are in perfect condition. Records advertised as Sealed or Unplayed should be Mint.; Please note I normally use Near Mint since unless sealed there will always be a minor imperfection!
Excellent (EX): The record shows some signs of having been played, but there is very little lessening in sound quality. The cover and packaging might have slight wear and/or creasing.
Very Good (VG): The record has obviously been played many times, but displays no major deterioration in sound quality, despite noticeable surface marks and the occasional light scratch. Normal wear and tear on the cover or extra items, without any major defects, is acceptable.
Good (G): The record has been played so much that the sound quality has noticeably deteriorated, perhaps with some distortion and mild scratches. The cover and contents suffer from folding, scuffing of edges, spine splits, discoloration, etc.
