This handsome LP from Melodiya (33 C 10-05687-8, Russian pressing, blue/silver label, stereo) features legendary cellist Daniil Shafran in magnificent accounts of Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major Hob. VIIb: 1 (Op. 101 – ed. by Francois-Auguste Gevaert) and Boccherini’s Cello Concerto No. 9 in B-flat Major G. 482 (ed. by Friedrich Grützmacher).

The former was recorded with conductor Neemi Jarvi and the USSR State Symphony Orchestra in September 1962, while the latter was made with with conductor Avrid Jansons and the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra in September 1966.

This is exalted playing by any measure and all those who treasure the art of the cello will find much to admire here, the sound first rate throughout, well capturing Shafran’s distinctive tone.

There are extensive liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket, printed in Russian only. The striking cover photo of Shafran is uncredited.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is FAIR (Note: This is below eBay’s lowest grading and almost at the bottom of my own scale). There is significant edgewear and creasing, however, the seams remain intact, if quite weak. There is also aging and discoloration, particularly to the rear panel. Still, the “softcover” jacket remains presentation worthy – still a decent copy.

The condition of the LP itself is EXCELLENT. Although surfaces are not perfectly silent, this is a fine copy and the playback is enjoyable. However, if you must have a flawless or NM copy, then please do not buy this LP. Overall, rates as an excellent collector's copy.
