Description
'Collaboration' was Shawn Phillips 5th studio album and many consider it to be one of his best. Released by A&M Records in the UK ( AMLS 64324 ) in 1971, 'Collaboration' was produced by Jonathan Weston and I consider it to be one of Phillips' most introspective albums. With strong contributions from Peter Robinson and Paul Buckmaster, 'Collaboration' placed Phillips at the forefront of the Folk-Rock movement which was to become the prevalent style for the next 2 - 3 years.
The copy I am offering is a 1st UK pressing and differs somewhat from later pressings. Firstly, the record was pressed on "red" translucent vinyl. When held normally, the record looks black. However, when held up to a strong light source, it appears to have a lovely, wine-red colored hue. Secondly, the record has substantial weight ; it does not "wobble" easily when shaken with both hands. Only the very 1st UK pressings are like this. Later pressings were not translucent and the vinyl were more flimsy. Of course, the other difference is sound quality. This 1st UK pressing sounds incredible. . .detailed, balanced and distortion-free.
Condition of Gatefold Sleeve: Excellent. . .minor wear to corners and edges. Vintage UK shop sticker placed at upper-right. Inner gatefold is near-perfect. Original inner-sleeve is included. Colors are still bold and bright . . . a very nice example of this usually well worn cover.
Condition of Record: VG(+) ~ Excellent. . . a somewhat difficult record to grade. Most of the audio grades Excellent. . However, due to the many quiet sections in the music, some light dust and static pops are heard. . . not enough to distract but occasionally noticeable. A very rare pressing that most collectors should be happy with.
