Description

This week we are offering some outstanding Shostakovich recordings.

Shostakovich Cello Sonata played by the dedicatee Daniel Shafran, the 1st recording from 1946 in surprisingly good sound, and the Violin Sonata played by its dedicatee performer David Oistrakh in 1968, in Oistrakh's home, with the composer at the piano in both instances. Pretty scarce lp with a well matched pairing, and the great performances of these works on the source label. If you buy the cd of this (which is listed at $99 cheapest on amazon), it is from an lp as here. This suggests the masters no longer exist. The atmosphere is palpable on both occasions, with as you might imagine, the composer and his great friends providing something close to the ultimate Shostakovich experience.
