Description
A native Chicagoan handed this to me with great care, noting that it had been handed down to him by his father. What it turns out to be is an album of mainly Sicilian songs, drama, and comedy: no doubt the album that only Papa was allowed to touch. It includes
Columbia E4756, E 4344, E4832 and E4720: The labels are a little difficult to read, but it seems this is a series in which Gaspari Marrone & Co (or the Marrone-Aguglia Co) perform scenes from I Mafiusi di la Vicaria, one of the most popular of Sicilian plays. One of the labels looks as if it says "I Manusi" but others definitely make it "I Mafiusi"
Columbia 14624-F: Frank Fazio, listed as "Italian Banjo with orchestra" performs Amorino and Piccolina
Columbia E4235: Saverio Benigno sings 'U Carrittieri and L'Acquaiola di Palermo, listed as "Italian folk song"
Victor 72305: The Four Sicilians (a clarinet, a mandolin, a guitar, and a bass) perform Viva L'Italia and Regina margherita (a mazurka)
Columbia E4112: I Quattro Siciliani (a clarinet, a mandolin, etc.) perform Lina (a mazurka) and Scherzosa (a polka)
Columbia A 2615: Guido Deiro, accordion soloist, plays Les Millions d'Arlequin, and My Florence
Columbia E4346: The Orchestrina plays Un Saluto a Venezia and la Bella Napoli
Columbia A152: The Columbia orchestra plays the Santiago Walyz and La Paloma (no, I don't know why this is in here, but if Papa wanted it here, I'm leaving it in)
Columbia E9044: Giovanni de Rasalia, one of the most popular Sicilian comedians of his day, appears as his character Nofrio in Nofrio allo Stato Civile and Nofrioa spara la Jocu di Focu
The records seem to have been kept in decent shape: they show minor wear but no major scratches, chips, or other blemishes. Purchaser pays $4 no frills shipping and handling within US, more for international or insurance. I will ship in the approved manner for 78s: sandwiched between cardboard and floating in a sea of styrofoam peanuts
