Description
First of all, due to the fact that some folks don’t read all of my auction description and conditions for bidding before they bid, I will emphasize from the beginning so there is no misunderstanding: NO PAYPAL ACCEPTED! Here is a VERY RARE LP from 1964. In fact, this one is so rare, it’s the only one I’ve ever had during more than 35 years of collecting LPs. It’s "The Sounds of the Weird-Ohs" on one side & "The Sounds of the Silly Surfers" on the other side. This is a VERY RARE DJ COPY released by Hairy Records subtitled "Music to Make Models By". How fitting since the cover depicts the many Hawk Models that were sold in stores at the time. The mid-1960s music scene in the US (aside from the British Invasion influence) was dominated by hot rods and surfing (Jan & Dean, Beach Boys, Ronnie & the Daytonas, etc.). Hawk Model Co. produced plastic models of weird racing fiends and various surfing characters. The series is pictured on the front and rear covers of this LP. I myself remember assembling the "Drag Hag" and "Digger" models when I was home sick from school. (I wish I still had them!) The Weird-Ohs LPs were somewhat novelty LPs released at that time. The Weird-Ohs LP’s were released on Mercury Records; However, only the VERY RARE DJ LP COPY in this auction was released on the Hairy Records Label in 1964. This is Hairy Records HR 101. And this LP comes complete with cover, original inner sleeve and vinyl 12-inch 33 RPM LP. The COVER is GRADED VG. The "Silly Surfers" (white) side of the cover shows aging and has what may be light mildew spotting. But you can see that this white side of the cover still looks nice and not disfigured. The other side of the cover (dark side) look nice (as you can see) with wonderful color. The bottom seam is fine. The top seam had a 3-inch seam split from the opening that has been nicely glued/repaired. The spine was split all the way, but it too has been repaired but has just 2-3 inches of loss ONLY on the spine. Note the cover has "Disgusting Music By Hairy Records" and the "Hawk" Model Co. logo in the top corner of each side. What is most remarkable is that it still has the original inner sleeve! Did you know the average person has 120,00 hairs on his/her head? Read the inner sleeve image! There is some writing at top left and right on this side of the inner sleeve. The other side of the sleeve has the song lyrics to the 12 cuts on this LP. Some aging glue stains can be seen on the right side and a lesser amount on the left side. The inner sleeve is split 2 inches on one side and almost all the way across the bottom (which can be glued if desired). The top/opening has a few small tears. Now for the vinyl: The LABELS ARE NEAR MINT. I had visually graded the VINYL to be VG on both sides with light scuffs and hairlines. However, I decided to play grade it too for accurate grading. Actually, it plays much better!!! So I HAVE PLAY-GRADED the VINLY at VG+!! (and I played almost every track.) So here you have it: A VERY RARE DJ LP of the Weird-Ohs, by Hawk Model Company and created by Gary Usher and Co. You will be hard pressed to find this one again. I have placed a reasonable reserve on this rarity for it to depart my collection to go to yours. You’ll enjoy this LP!! FYI, I use Goldmine Grading Standards (G for Good, VG for Very Good, VG+ for Very Good Plus, NM for Near Mint, M for Mint) to visually grade the LPs and cassettes I auction (unless I state that I play graded the item), so please know the descriptions of these grades before bidding. On Jun-10-05 at 18:16:16 PDT, seller added the following information: On the spine ONLY, there is a maximum of 2-3 inches of PAPER (I forgot to add this word) loss. Actually, it's more like 2 inches or less in different parts of the spine, not all missing in one place.price rating
