This beautiful LP from La Voix de son Maitre (ASDF 136. French Pathé-Marconi pressing, red/silver semi-circle "Stereo" label – ED1) features Constantin Silvestri and the Philharmonia Orchestra's impassioned and deeply elegiac account of Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 6 in B minor Op. 74 "Pathetique", recorded in 1957. A highly personal reading, perhaps, but one nonetheless imbued with Silvestri's unique magnetism and the Philharmonia respond with playing of great power and pathos – superb!

In reviewing EMI’s CD re-issue of his recorded legacy with the label, the wonderful critic and author David Hurwitz wrote for ClassicsToday:

“It really doesn’t matter what orchestra Silvestri has to work with, or what the repertoire. His personality was so powerful that he almost invariably achieves stunning, distinctive, compelling results. And so we have a spectacular Tchaikovsky Manfred and Dvorák “New World” Symphony (twice) from Paris, a luscious Scheherazade from Bournemouth, and a brilliant Shostakovich Fifth from Vienna. Silvestri’s glorious contemporary music disc (relatively speaking) of Bartók’s Divertimento, Hindemith’s Mathis der Maler, and Stravinsky’s Symphony in Three Movements appears in stereo for the first time (the Disky reissue was mono)…So spend some time with a genuine podium genius. It will do you good.”

There are insightful liner notes on the reverse side of the jacket by Jean-Jacques Normand, printed in French only. The striking cover design was executed by Atelier Joubert.

CONDITION:

The gradations of condition I use are as follows: MINT, Near-Mint, Excellent, Very Good, Good, Fair, Poor.

The condition of the jacket is EXCELLENT. There is a crease to the lower-left corner and minor wear to the other corners, but really that is all. There are no seamsplits, owners’ markings, or other defects, and the whole remains solid, bright, glossy, and highly attractive – overall, an excellent collector’s copy.

The condition of the LP itself is near-MINT. Though surfaces are not perfectly silent (and thus I have rated it NM vs. MINT), this is a fine copy and playback is superb. However, if you must have perfect surfaces, then please do not buy this LP – this is a fine collector's copy.
