Compilation producers: Joe McEwen, Molly Reeve-Morrison.Recorded between 1931 and 1979. Includes photos and liner notes by Tina Sinatra.This 2-disc anthology is the soundtrack to the 1992 CBS biography on Frank Sinatra featuring Bing Crosby, Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Billie Holiday and Benny Goodman. It is the first collection to include important works from each of the four labels Sinatra recorded for: RCA, Columbia, Capitol and Reprise.Sinatra has been seen as the only way of portraying Sinatra's life -- as a miniseries. The problem is, of course, that the curiosity is really in the undocumented portions of Sinatra's life -- his early career, for the most part, when he was on the way to making himself a household name. Later in life Sinatra was more of a public figure, thus, the reasoning goes, less interesting in being better documented. The miniseries, then, was weighted toward the early years, taking everything after the '50s in something of a rush. As a result, this soundtrack album, drawn from Sinatra's recordings for four record companies (and throwing in two sides from Bing Crosby and one from Billie Holiday) is biased in favor of the earlier material, providing more than disc of sides drawn from the Columbia and RCA Victor catalogs, with Capitol covered in a rush and Reprise barely covered at all (the obligatory "My Way" does close out the set, however.) This is not to say that the set is a waste of time. Far from it, as this really does represent the only time Sinatra's work has been compiled from so many sources. In addition, some attempt at restoration has been made (though noise reduction can't cover the worst surface noise on the older cuts). It gives an interesting view of Sinatra's growth as a vocalist, with his peak period definitely coming with the Capitol sides with Nelson Riddle. Given this as a starting point, too, it's possible to gradually expand the listener's range via the trio of box sets available (The Voice from Columbia, The Capitol Years, and The Reprise Years) and then through purchases of individual albums -- less consistent, of course, during the later Reprise years. Overall, a very good condensation of Sinatra through the years (and, yes, it could have been better; there's much left out) and a worthy project indeed. ~ Steven McDonald
