Description

PCL001: SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES BY VICTOR MOSCOSO

-         Bands: Siouxsie and the Banshees

-         Date: June 6-7, 1986

-         Venue: Hollywood Palladium, Hollywood, CA.

-         Artist: Victor Moscoso

-         Particulars: Original first printing, silk-screen poster.  This is the first poster published by our very own Phil Cushway of ArtRock.  Dimensions are approx. 22 X 30.

This is the first poster I ever published for sale.  Previous to this, I had done posters for bands like: R.E.M., The Gun Club, Afrika Bambaata, etc.  I had a renewed interest in the original 1960s posters, and had in fact been buying them steadily.  Around this time, I began wondering, why there were not “quality” posters for this generation.  There were of course black and white flyers and even some inexpensive color posters, but nothing like the original heyday of Rock and Roll poster art, from the 1960s.  At that point, I had no experience in printing publishing, licensing, art, or anything else that might have been helpful.  So I hand-wrote (literally) a letter to the manager of Siouxsie and the Banshees stating that I wanted to publish a poster for some of their tour dates.  To my shock and awe, I actually got a response that expressed interest.  I then went to Victor Moscoso and Stanley Mouse asking them if they would be interested in doing a poster for a punk band, with a different aesthetic sensibility of course, but with the same touch of “art” that they gave to their original posters.  This Siouxsie, by Victor Moscoso, was the first one chosen, and looking at it, it really is a perfect blend of the 60s with the 80s.  The poster was also printed at Tea Lautrec, the legendary San Francisco printer that printed virtually all of the early Fillmore and some of the early Family Dog images, as well as others.  For this print, Victor chose to do a split fountain background, which involves putting different colors of ink, sometimes separated by wood wedge, in the rolling ink cylinders, that feed the ink into the press and onto the paper.   The effect he came up with was simply put, quite outstanding, as can be seen here.
