Description
Here we have a Coxsone production from 1967, and it's in such nice clean condition that I have no need to start off with my usual disclaimer (see the other LOVELY RECORDS that I'm selling, at modest prices, on eBay at the moment).
It's Ossie and the Upsetters, produced by Coxsone Dodd in 1967, originally for the C&N label. The toons are "Turn Me On" (a skanky mid tempo dancer) and "True Love" which is nothing to do with the Bing Crosby/Grace Kelly song of the same name. Both sides are great fun, and the record is as rare as a polite child or a sympathetic traffic warden. It is as hard to find as a government spokesman whenever the balloon goes up. Curiously, Coxsone Dodd has almost buried the vocals under the riddim track on both sides. After a verse or two, the singers eventually become audible, as well as the Bingo-Hall organ. I wonder if it was originally a demo?
The drummer, whoever he is, is a magnificent super-human.
Conditionwise it is amazingly clean. It shines like the beacon of goodness and integrity that our politicians should be, but ain't. I can conservatively grade it as a very strong VG+++ or perhaps even better. You'll never find a tidier one.. even though there is some faded writing on the label "CJ" on one side, and "Stonewall" on the other. The B side has small marks (probably from the removal of a pre-decimal price sticker) and, prong fanatics, the centre is the unusual THREE PRONG version. You can hear scruffier copies of both sides on You Tube.. the ones I'm advertising here are much better.
