Description
It's always a problem grading these lovely old SKA records.
They went to lots of parties.
That means that they're a bit battered and that's why many have names written on the label.
HOWEVER... they're usually cut VERY LOUD and though they look a bit rough, they sound OK (especially if you press the "Mono" button).
This means that a 60's Ska goodie can be perfectly acceptable, even if it looks R.A.A.B.B. (Rough As A Bear's Bottom)..
Please “bear” that in mind when reading my descriptions.
Here we have a fine combination of talents. It’s “Pied Piper” and “It’s Alright” by Rita Marley. It’s a 45 RPM Single with a three prong centre, on the always interesting RIO record label.
It’s a Studio One Production by Clement Coxsone Dodd.
It was pressed in the UK in 1966. The number is R108.
I see that “Marley” wrote the “B” side, but I dunno if that is Rita or her hubby Bob. The Wailers (we are not worthy) did a song of the same name a few years later, but I think it’s a different one.
It’s got few light scuffs from sleeveless storage, but it’s quite clean and plays very well. Judicious pressing of the “mono” button is advised which will remove any stray rice crispy noises and a splendid time is guaranteed for all.
“Mary” has written her name in a small neatly-drawn flower or cloud on the label.
“Pied Piper” (a version of the Crispian St Peters hit from 1966) was one of the tracks featured on the legendary “Club Ska 67” LP.
Using the “Record Collector” magazine’s yardstick, I reckon it’s a more-or-less round-about in-the-vicinity of VG or better but it plays much better than it looks.
Bid now, before civilization collapses, and everywhere starts to look like Grimsby in 1947.
