Skip James' recordings of 1931 have been reissued and recompiled countless times (well, probably about seven until now), and his music demands that sort of attention. James' early sessions are some of the most distinctive and influential in the history of the blues, having a direct bearing on the music of Robert Johnson, and a great many artists since - everyone from Cream in the '60s to Beck in the '90s has had a go at reinterpreting these songs. Beyond his actual writing, James' guitar playing style has proven to be particularly significant. A pioneer of the DADFAD tuning that went on to inform so much American folk and bluegrass, James was idolised by the likes of John Fahey (who many years later recorded James for Takoma) and that wonderfully lyrical, ornate playing style remains one of the most impressive techniques in all of Delta blues. The recordings on this fabulous LP from Mississippi might not be some of the most obscure music to have appeared on the imprint, but there's a very good reason for it being continually repressed and reissued - it documents some of the finest depression-era blues compositions you'll ever hear. Amazing music - highly recommended.
