Skip James Today Vanguard VRS-9219 MONO PROMO 1966
CONDITION: Very nice copy, conservatively graded and based on listening to record in its entirety the morning of July 29, 2016 while preparing this listing and using my Hitachi HT45 turntable with an Audio Technica DC30 cartridge tracking at about 1.5 grams. The record has some very light surface noise throughout that is noticeable, of course, because of the nature of the recordings themselves, i.e., live in-studio performances with minimal instrumentation (guitar or piano accompaniment to Skip's one-of-a-kind vocal styings). The record had not been played for some time, so halfway through each side I used the cueing lever to blow off the small dust ball that accumulated before resuming the audition. I had intended to grade the record VG +, but alas, there is a portion of Cherryball, the last cut on side one, that has a steady scratch "click," though it tracks without incident. Let's go around the horn on the jacket: Corner dings, upper left corner worst, with light abrasion to the slick; minimal edge wear, with a few nicks- no seam splits!; light ring wear to the surface of the front cover and an area in the upper left hand corner beneath the Vanguard label with some residue from the removal of a sticker (?); back cover is stamped in red "PROMOTIONAL COPY NOT FOR SALE," and there is a little paper loss in the text within the paragraph at the top of the middle column of the liner notes; the white paper of the back cover, naturally, has some toning from aging. All of the above is shared as MY responsibility in our deal, and in the interest of full disclosure. In truth, this is an amazingly beautiful copy, likely the one you've held out for- it would be very difficult to find another in the same condition. And a promo copy? Very unlikely...maybe impossible. If you happen to be a dj who hosts an all-vinyl show, this is for YOU.

PROVENANCE: Memory is a little hazy on this because I comb the racks in thrift shops and library community sales religiously. Wilmette Public Library, ca 2000, is plausable
