An absolute ripper Limited Edition 'yellow' vinyl release of this classic debut Skyhooks album that includes 2 extra 'live' bonus tracks. When play testing this I'd almost forgotten what a solid and excellent LP this is .... a winner here that's for sure.

History recants how the band got off the ground when they recruited occasional singer, surfer and carpenter Graeme Strachan. “Shirley’ Strachan provided remarkable vocal skills, magnetic stage and screen presence which soon drew attention. Alongside Macainsh's acerbic lyrics, another vital facet of the group's sound was the twin-guitar attack of Red Symons and Bob "Bongo" Starkie.

Adopting elements of glam rock in their presentation and with lyrics that presented frank depictions of the social life of young Australia in the 1970s, the band shocked conservative middle Australia with their outrageous (for the time) costumes, lyrics, and on-stage activities, with the result that seven of the ten tracks on their debut album were banned by Australian commercial radio. Much of the group's success derived from its distinctive repertoire, most of which was penned by bassist Greg Macainsh.  

Skyhooks went on to carve out a massive following on the tough Australian Pub circuit. While other seventies bands were playing to half full halls, the Hooks took the low road and packed out venues like the Bondi Lifesaver and Wollongong Leagues Club receiving up to 4 encores each night…. Great days indeed if you were around at the time.      

A solid gold classic Australian album, rude, crude and highly tempting. This was arguably the watershed moment when Australian music stopped slavishly copying overseas trends and began to find it's own path. Skyhooks wrote about ordinary urban and suburban Australian life with risque songs about getting into and out of casual relationships. But there was also more than a dash of social comment, with protests against the "future shock" of rapid technological change and the calamity and "horror" of the "6.30 news".
Musically the album is upbeat, twangy rocky pop, slightly quirky and quite original. The arrangements are very good; bass, rhythm and lead each having it's own clear part to play (just like rock n' roll should be!!) All the songs bar one were written by Greg MacAinish. Only Red Symons' "Smut" approaches a Zappaist level of disgustingness, the other moments are more just very "cheeky". Shirley Strachan had a great voice, not just another generic high-pitched 70s croon but uniquely his own, with an excellent range - he could and frequently did belt it out, loud, high and clear as a bell.
Skyhooks would go on to write quite a few good songs for their next two albums, but this was undoubtedly their best and most consistent album; nearly every song is catchy, and though not heavy, the album simply rocks.

Outer Sleeve : original gate-fold cover in top condition. No writing. No marks. No splits. A little creasing on the front but no big deal. A hint of ring and edge-wear on the back though pretty much minimal.
