f you asked me what the greatest rock album of all time was, I would go back and forth between about six to eight different possibilities. But if you asked what the greatest funk album of all time was, there would be no question. There's a Riot Goin' On torches everything else. With this, Sly Stone established himself as funk's greatest bona fide musical genius except James Brown himself- the creator of the entire genre. It is one of those discs which works best in its entirety- you need to immerse yourself in this thick, enveloping funky stew- but there are stand-out tracks.

Best of all are the two stellar side-closers Africa Talks to You and Thank You for Talkin' to Me Africa. These slow, intense, druggy, heavily textured epics almost single-handedly re-wrote the rule book for funk. Family Affair is still widely sampled by rap artists today, and, like so many of these songs, it pulls in different directions at once. It is funky and danceable but also rather world-weary and glum. I love the rasping vocals on Just Like a Baby and Smilin' and always smile at the unexpectedly sunny Runnin' Away. I
