Brief Artist & Album Info: "SMALL FACES" is the debut album of The Small Faces, released in 1966. It includes the hit singles "Whatcha Gonna Do About It" and "Sha-La-La-La-Lee". The album was well received by music critics and was popular with the public, rising to number 3 on the UK album chart remaining at the top for several weeks.

In 1965, the sound of Motown was everywhere. The label's songs were heard around the globe, with "the sound of young America" having a huge impact on what was to become the sound of young England. A number of overseas groups were inspired by those tracks, none more so than the Small Faces.

"The Small Faces, the Who and various other bands came along, all copying what they were hearing from across the Atlantic, but with a different twist," recalled recording engineer Glyn Johns in the Small Faces bio, The Young Mods Forgotten Story. The U.K. kids recast blues and soul music from the States in their own mold, which soon evolved into the Mod youth movement.

"The fashion thing, the hair, the clothes, the whole Mod thing. Nobody at the record company got that. They didn't understand that side of it," Johns reflected. "By the time the first Small Faces LP was done, they had woken up to the fact that there was an enormous amount of money to be made out of this stuff."

The Small Faces formed in early 1965, beefing up their love of American music with a stash of loud guitars, crashing drums, youthful attitude and Mod style to the mix. The band signed to Decca Records and released its debut single, the stomping "Whatcha Gonna Do About It?" in the summer of 1965. It hit the U.K. Top 20 and was quickly followed by "Sha La La La Lee" and "Hey Girl."

In May 1966, the group issued its first, self-titled album. But unlike most British rock acts of the era, the Small Faces included two of their early hit singles ("Sha La La La Lee" and "Whatcha Gonna Do About It") on the record, which helped push it to No. 3 in the chart. It didn't hurt that Small Faces was a blast of power, energy and enthusiasm from start to end.

During the sessions for the album, original keyboardist Jimmy Winston was replaced by Ian McLagan. ("When I first met the other Faces it was like looking at a mirror," he once recalled. "I couldn't believe it! We all looked alike.") McLagan appears on the LP's cover, but both musicians perform on various songs, the bulk of which were written by band members.

CONDITION

LABELS:

The Red Decca with Silver Print Labels are Both in SUPER condition with Hardly any Spindle Wear or Spider Marks. (Only noticable when held to light) There are no Tears, Marks or Writing. All of the Silver Print is Unfaded and readable. I would easily grade these as Very Good++!!!! If Not better.

VINYL:

Plays throughout absolutely brilliant with no Pops, Clicks or Jumps. The record still contains that glossy sheen though there are several surface marks and thumbnails to be seen, these in NO way interfere with the superb sound quality. This Album plays up to and  beyond its high visual grading with hardly anything of note to fault. It offers strong, distortion-free sound, all frequencies are sharp and clear – sound quality is very high with a wide dynamic range and very detailed sound. A typical polished production from Rungdren (and to a lesser degree, Harrison). Minimal surface sound and no tracking issues. This play-grade proved a real pleasure when playing this fast disappearing album, this being the first example I have had for some time, and possibly the best all-round one for me yet. It will prove quite difficult to find a significantly better copy and merits a very strong recommendation. I would grade both sides as Very Good++!!!! If it LOOKED as good as it Plays I would have graded it as Excellent!!!! It Truly is an Outstanding album.

COVER: 

This is a single Front laminated format with Printed In England By James Upton Ltd. Birmingham & London. This Truly is a Stunning cover. It has a Coloured photo of the band to the Front while the Reverse is White with a single Flipback. The Front is in Beautiful condition with only a Couple of very light laminate Creases. These are not Lifts, Rips or Tears. There is no Writing or Marks anywhere. The Pinched edged Spine is in Perfect order with All writing readable. There is a small Split (not completely through) Approximately a1/4 of an inch about a 3rd of the way down on the Opening edge, the rest of the Edges are all in Great order. There is also a Crease to the top right hand side (Though Nothing too drastic). The reverse Apart from Natural signs of Ageing is in Great order with no major Marks or Writing. This cover is incredibly difficult to find even in Good condition simply because of the design and age. However I would be happy enough to grade this as Very Good=/Very Good++!!!!

COVER SUMMARY: Not seen often, this one is in lovely condition with only gentle clues of age. This classic cover should please Many collectors.

INNER SLEEVE: There is hardly any creasing and all edges are unsplit with no repairs. Graded as Very Good++!!!!

Album Played For Grading: I play/grade ALL records I offer before submitting, I also play them in their entirety unless clearly stated otherwise. I do NOT play snippets or joining grooves to check for sound quality and quietness – I play from the beginning to end. I use a Linn LP12 Sondek turntable with Ittok Mk II arm and Ortofon Quintet Black moving coil cartridge and Linn Lingo, with my Linn system and Forest Totem Speakers. This system is guaranteed  to pick up any distortion or interference within the sound.

Grading: In my opinion I REFUSE to believe that there is ANY record that can be truly graded as Mint, the BEST that could be offered is Mint- (minus)!!!! Especially so from the 50's, 60's, 70's or up to the present date!!!! Even copies bought new today would have some form of imperfection on the Record or Cover!!!! Under that assumption I will NEVER use the word Mint in any of my descriptions and Mint- is the HIGHEST grade I would ever use. So I will only offer Excellent, Good or Poor with a -(minus), +(plus) or ++(plus,plus)!!!!

Postage: All of my records will be professionally packaged. I use Dependapack Vinyl Record Mailers that have locking tab closures with strong locking tab record wraps. I also use corrugated record stiffeners and extra strong tape marked with Handle With Care.
