This tightly propulsive debut showcases the split between covers, songs the label pushed on the band, and a few originals. "Come On Children" echoes James Brown's "Think" and "You Need Loving" is based on Willie Dixon's "You Need Love." Later, Led Zeppelin would rework the Small Faces' "You Need Loving" into "Whole Lotta Love" and while it's easy to hear how Steve Marriott's raw-throated howl influenced Robert Plant as much as Marriott's heavy shards of guitar influenced Jimmy Page, what's striking about The Small Faces is that there is very little blues or rock & roll here: it's all hard-charging, driving R&B and soul with a great beat. At the time Steve Marriott was certainly one of the most soulful white singers in of the 60's ; channel that into garage R&B with some mod-beat and you have one heck of an album.  

The very talented vocalist / guitarist / songwriter Steve Marriott,  whose husky voice and incredible delivery in tune with great guitar lines, ensured The Small Faces arrived with a bang ... these guys were really very, very good as this album proves beyond doubt.

Vinyl : - cleaned and played completely both sides for grading : Tracks along great with a mostly fairly clean and crisp dynamic sound. I say mostly as I detected a few light pops in-between tracks occasionally and there is a noticeable difference (albeit minor) between the 2 sides here with Side 2, in my opinion, having a slightly more brighter sound than Side 1. No skips or nasty sound blemishes either side despite numerous light marks and I defy anyone who has this gem in their collection not to play it ( it is THAT sort of album !!) and so this particular copy has been spun many times over and looks well enjoyed.... though having said that it is a heavy piece (150+ grams), deep-grooved and still delivers a pretty decent sound.
Obviously nowhere near its original gloss and on first appearances one would tend to shy away, as I said ... numerous marks on both sides, however looks can be deceptive and while visually you may be inclined to give it a G+ I can assure you it plays heaps better than that and is worth a VG (at the very least) on playback quality in my book.

So don't go expecting a world-beater here but it is still way too good for the bin and definitely a filler until a better copy comes along though these are now pushing 50 years on and very difficult to find in any condition.

Labels : Clean with numerous spindle traces.

Sleeve : A quite tidy cover here.
FRONT :- The laminated front has no writing, no splits and no ring-wear. A few nicks down left-hand side and a little edge-wear at right-hand (entrance) side but nothing of any real concern. No creasing of any major note either.
BACK :- Non laminated and white so naturally accentuates any blemishes though thankfully these are few ... a hint of ring-wear as per photo along with some age-wear / handling marks primarily along the bottom. No writing or splits. Overall it stands up pretty well. The spine is intact and the upper & lower seams are excellent as well.
The bottom line here being I can't see anyone being not happy with this jacket.
