Description
Original 1999 double vinyl of the astonishing "Dah Shinin' "
I purchased this album new in 1995 or 1996 at Beat Street Records in Brooklyn. Damn what a record. Along with Illmatic and the first Wu album, this record exemplifies 1990s New York hip hop. The best tracks that the Beatminerz (Evil Dee and Mr. Walt) ever produced are on this record. When rappers across the country were screaming their heads off about how hard they were, these guys exuded a much more convincing and casual menace. When Puffy was wearing white mink coats, Smif-n-Wessun shot all of their videos on housing project rooftops in army-navy surplus. The fanciest garment in all of them is a Blackhawks jersey. Tek and Steel remind me of guys who used to scare the hell out of me on the C train when I was seventeen and a total chump. That's what this record does - it opens a whole portal of memory to a very different New York, with a musical aesthetic that says more about the milieu surrounding its production than could ever be conveyed with boastful lyrics.
Sleeve is in great condition, with the caveat of a little ringwear, and that my (the seller's) name is written in the barcode area. My name is also written on three LP labels - a relic form a time when I lent my records to friends for them to check out. Please see images for reference.
NRV 2005-1 is clearly printed on the spine.
Like the rest of my records (almost exclusively hip hop from between1989-2001), this one has been carefully stored and left un-played for twenty years - kept upright on a shelf, in a polybag, in my mom's nice clean house.
I am selling off my collection now to pay my son's college tuition bill.
Please see my other auctions for more low-mileage 1990's hip-hop!
