ABOUT THE RECORD Songs of the Humpback Whale was a groundbreaking recording that introduced the intricate vocalizations of humpback whales to the public. Selling over 100,000 copies, it became the bestselling environmental album in history, raising awareness of whale intelligence and fueling the global Save the Whales movement. The album featured five tracks—Solo Whale, Slowed-Down Solo Whale, Tower Whales, Distant Whale, and Three Whale Trip—recorded by Roger Payne, Katharine Payne, and Frank Watlington, capturing the haunting and complex songs of male humpbacks. Its cultural impact was profound, influencing environmental policy, inspiring artists, and earning a 2010 induction into the National Recording Registry. No singles from the album charted as hits, as it was primarily a collection of field recordings rather than commercial songs.
