Fantasy Jazz 45rpm Series Master Tape Background

All 100 of the classic Jazz recordings (four sets of 25, with two released per month over a period of about four years) reissued by Analogue Productions beginning in 2002 were from the original Master Tapes, which were tracked down by Concord/Fantasy Records in-house expert archivist Stuart Kremsky (search “Kremsky Iron Mountain” on Hoffman forum for more details). 

In 2007, to cut costs, Concord let Mr. Kremsky go (along with many others) and moved all of the Fantasy Record Label tapes to a facility called “Iron Mountain”, where they were entered on a computer database without regard to which boxes contained original masters and which boxes contained copy tapes.  Many of the boxes are not properly marked to begin with, and the people who understood the decades old filing and storage system are now gone.

All of which makes any reissue from 2007 onward of albums on the Fantasy, Riverside, Contemporary, Prestige and Specialty Labels, at least from the actual Master Tapes, highly unlikely.  That won’t prevent any reissue label from claiming they used the real tapes, but I wouldn’t believe it without a photo of the Master Tape box next to the front page of a current New York Times, and a testimonial quote by the mastering engineer.

Fortunately, this series was mastered and pressed before these events occurred.  Some of the original LPs of this album can sound great, but many don't, for a variety of reasons.  Most often condition will be a problem, but even a Mint example won't sound its best if it was pressed from a worn stamper.  If this is one of your favorites, you really should hear it at the finest and most life-like that it has ever sounded — on quiet 180g premium vinyl, from the real original Mono master tape, cut on an all vacuum-tube system, at 45rpm.

One of the BEST titles from the first 25 albums in this Analogue Productions Fantasy Jazz Series from 2002, rarely offered or even seen in Sealed condition anymore. 

$695 for a worn out scratchy original in “VG” condition?

Checking eBay closed listings for this title is very interesting.  Would you pay $695 for an original described as "VG" with "moderate scratches and scuffs throughout", that "plays great on both sides" but has "moderate noise during quiet passages" and moderate noise "between tracks"?  For considerably less money, on the rare occasion that one becomes available, you can have Saxophone Colossus in amazing sound quality, mastered from the ORIGINAL master tape by a mastering engineer who appreciates the original analogue sound, on premium (quiet!) vinyl, with greater dynamics and even more "live" presence on these 45rpm tube-cut LPs than the originals ever had.

World class title.  World class SOUND QUALITY.  Limited to just 1,000 pressings worldwide. 

One short pressing run. Out of print for 10 years now, and highly collectible.

Sure, buy the $500 to $700 scratchy worn-out originals for the nostalgia, or to impress your friends who like scratchy records.  But when nobody else is around, and you really want to hear what Sonny Rollins sounded like in 1957, playing Saxophone Colossus for you in your listening room, put this one on.

(M) Straight corners, no edge wear, no seam-splits, no ring-wear.  The “AcousTech Mastering” sticker reads “Mastered at Acoustech by Kevin Gray and Steve Hoffman”, the perforated plastic along the opening edge of the loose-fit outer plastic cover is completely intact and sealed.  A top condition collector’s example of what many consider Sonny Rollins’ best album.

Double-Box Packaging:

The sealed Album will be placed inside an additional new clear poly outer protective album cover, sandwiched between two album-sized cardboard stiffeners which are then carefully taped, lightly squeezing the album between the cardboard stiffener edges, enough to prevent the album from sliding up and down or side to side, preventing any seam splits to the sealed album during transit.  The album is packaged in a record LP mailer box with cardboard stiffeners and sealed.  The record mailer box is then placed inside a larger heavy cardboard (200Lb. Test) shipping box, surrounded by foam peanuts and/or bubble-wrap.  Your record album will be packaged securely and insured. (see photos below)

There is NO REASON to take chances with substandard packaging methods or materials.

Return Policy: If the album was damaged during shipping, or a significant error has been made in the description of condition, please contact me within 3 days of receipt and have the album returned to me within 14 days, packaged as you received it in the original shipping boxes (unless damaged) for a refund of the purchase price and original shipping.  Return shipping is the Buyer’s responsibility.

These are the packaging materials and sequence:

1) First a layer of foam peanuts in the large outer shipping box, the brand new box is 200Lb test heavy cardboard.

2) Next the album, sealed inside a standard Record Mailer box, with cardboard stiffeners (the way most sellers ship albums) is placed on the layer of foam peanuts.

3) Every side of the Record Mailer box has approximately 1” of foam peanuts for padding protection.

4) Final layer of foam peanuts, filled to the top.

5) Large outer box sealed.
