Prestige Bluesville 1059, “Sonny Is King” with Sonny Terry, vocals and harmonica; Lightnin’ Hopkins, guitar; Brownie McGhee, guitar; Leonard Gaskin, bass; Belton Evans, drums; from 1963. Liner notes by Leroi Jones. Original-label vinyl looks like DG on one side but not the other; at any rate, it is a heavy pressing and plays mostly with no background sound, though there is slight static in the background on Side B. I will rate it VG++. The heavyweight jacket is in the original shrink wrap and looks about like new with less than 1 cm of seamwear at bottom opening. There are no ringwear, corner wear, bands, writing, or stamps. Songs are “One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show”, “Changed the Lock on the Door”, “Tater Pie”, “She’s So Sweet”, “Diggin’ My Potatoes”, “Sonny’s Coming”, “Ida Mae”, “Callin’ My Mama”, “Bad Luck”, and “Blues form the Bottom”. The session on Side A with Lightnin’ Hopkins was supposedly payback for Sonny’s guest spot on the Bluesville 1029 “Last Night Blues” release. This is one of a set of original Bluesville LPs from several collections brought together for sale this week on eBay. Most are original DG copies in remarkable condition, and many are in the original shrink wrap. Shipping is $4.00 media mail, $8.00 priority mail within the continental U.S.; $18.00 regular airmail to the U.K., Europe, Japan, Korea, Australia, and New Zealand. Additional LPs in a single package are $1.00 additional within U.S. and Canada, $2.00 elsewhere. For overseas shipments, registered mail is strongly recommended at $11.75 extra. Many old records are practically antiques and should be treated that way. This LP will be packaged with the record inside an inner sleeve but outside the jacket; both are placed inside a sealed outer sleeve and shipped inside a special oversized handcrafted mailer with padding on all sides. It is designed thick enough not to be bent in transit and strong enough to withstand a drop from a second-story window. More than two LPs together may be mailed inside a heavy Bags Unlimited pizza-style box. Your LP should arrive in the same condition as on the day it was shipped. All used LPs are play-graded on a VPI turntable with Audioquest tonearm and Grado cartridge.
