Los Angeles-based altoist Sonny Criss found new expression in the politically charged, big band-rooted compositions of Horace Tapscott on this revered late-60s session. Recorded in 1968 and now reissued via the OJC Series, it captures Criss at his most exploratory-still grounded in bebop but emboldened by Tapscott's expansive charts. 'Sonny's Dream' opens with urgency and sweep, while 'Ballad For Samuel' draws out Criss's mournful lyricism. 'The Black Apostles' and 'The Golden Pearl' spotlight the ensemble's sharp precision, with players like Conte Candoli, Tommy Flanagan and Teddy Edwards forming a nimble, intuitive unit. There's a particular poise to 'Daughter Of Cochise', built around a slow build and shimmering horn voicings, and closer 'Sandy And Niles' adds something bluer, more introspective. Pressed on 180-gram vinyl with full analogue mastering, this is a deeply rewarding reissue that captures both the sophistication and spirit of Criss's most ambitious work.
