Description
This is not only a pretty rare single, much sought after and changing hands recently for around £140 a copy, but its source adds extra nostalgia too as it came from the record library of Yorkshire's pirate radio ship - RADIO 270. It was played on the station for a few weeks on its release in April 1967, largely due to the fact that one of the Radio 270 directors was the wife of a leading Pye Records executive. Its an uptempo jazz-influenced near-instrumental with dominat organ and some pretty rabid xylophone. The flip sounds like it was recorded live with the crowd joining in on the yells and the claps, a lot like Wynder K Frog's best tracks.
TIMEBOX were formed two years previously in Southport as the Take 5, and signed to Pye in late 66 after touring in support of the Kinks, the Small Faces and Lou Christie. They then did a short residency at the legendary London night club the Whiskey A Go Go, whose regular clients included the Beatles, the Stones and most music biz glitterati. Pye put ace producer John Shroeder in charge of their sessions and this was their second single. A year later they were with Decca Deram and had been joined by Mike Patto where they hit big time with the Four Seasons song, "Beggin'", which immediately meant their earlier releases escalated in value. Those values have climbed steadily ever since, making this an investment.
