GIDEON 'MGIBE' NXUMALO Early-Mart South African Soul Town KRS 107 1970 VG/VG a rather 'loose' session intended as a tribute to drummer Early Mabuza (that's Mabuza's photo on the cover) - the record opens out with an irritatingly twee poem written and recited by Leslie Sehume (later widely suspected - rightly or wrongly? - of being an apartheid government collaborator) before proceeding to the first track, a large band (supposedly 13 players but it doesn't sound like that many) number, followed by a Nxumalo solo, then on side 2 another band item and then finally a piano with rhythm track. Sehume's notes are long on atmosphere but short on info - we find out the flautist is Dennis Nene but none of the identities of the other musos are revealed (I'd guess Dennis Mpale on trumpet and Alan Kwela on guitar, among others), even the so-called "big name drummer".
