THIRD AVENUE CELLARS Niza-Niza/Ka Marao South African Big Beat BT296 E 1960 Meteor Records started out in Cape Town in late 50s recording Afrikaans music, then they moved to Johannesburg and started their 'Big Beat' label for the African market. Their first African producer seems to have been one A.S. Namethe, at least to judge by the frequency with which his name appears as a composer of various Big Beat titles. On Niza-Niza a voice - which is probably his - introduces the song as the 'biggest hit of the New Year', a hugely optimistic prediction indicating that the record - recorded sometime in September - was set for release the following December. This is a small African jazz group probably drawn from the usual 'Loafers Corner' musos - the trombone sounds like Mickey Vilikazi and the sax might be David ' Boy Masaka' Mope.
